The USS Bonefish has a legacy of excellence spanning nearly 46 years and two diesel electric submarines, named after the fish, bonefish, also known as a dogfish, ladyfish and sturgeon.

The first United States Ship Bonefish, SS-223 was a Gato-Class submarine, commissioned 31 May 1943 and lost near the end of World War II in June 1945.  She made eight war patrols during WWII.

The second USS Bonefish, SS-582 was a Barbel-Class submarine, commissioned 9 July 1959 and decommissioned 28 September 1988.

The USS Bonefish Base has four members of our crew who proudly served aboard USS Bonefish SS-582.

Bonefish Base received its Certificate of Charter on 26 April 2008 from USSVI Western District Six Commander, Mike Bircumshaw.  Michael Williamson was the first Base Commander.  The base is homeported in Redlands, CA and supports submariners throughout the Inland Empire.
